Tanto la ciudad como su provincia son uno de los principales centros de actividad de nuestro deporte en España, con la celebración de importantes competiciones nacionales e internacionales y de un gran número de carreras en ruta. En este sentido podemos reseñar que Málaga ha sido sede del Campeonato de España Absoluto en dos ocasiones: 1996 y el año pasado, en este último caso en el mismo recinto que acogerá la Copa. Además, ha organizado la Copa de Europa de clubes en 1994 y el Campeonato de España de medio maratón en 1997.
La provincia de Málaga también ha dado grandes nombres al atletismo español, siendo algunos de sus más representativos Carlos Azulay, campeón de España de decatlón en los años 1981 y 1988; Miguel de los Santos, uno de los mejores vallistas españoles; los mediofondistas José Manuel Cerezo y Álvaro Fernández, el decatleta Óscar González, Natividad Vizcaíno, que fuera plusmarquista nacional de lanzamiento de jabalina, o la marchadora Rocío Florido, vencedora en los Campeonatos Iberoamericanos de Huelva’2004. La ciudad cuenta con grandes infraestructuras para la práctica de nuestro deporte, con tres pistas de atletismo: la más antigua es la del Polideportivo Carranque, que data de los años 60, y más recientemente se construyó la del Campus Universitario de Teatinos. Por último, el año pasado con ocasión del Campeonato de España se inauguró la primera fase del flamante Estadio “Ciudad de Málaga”, que será el escenario de la SPAR Copa de Europa. Málaga también es la sede de la Federación Andaluza de atletismo y cuenta con más de 700 licencias de atletas, lo que representa el 25% de toda la Comunidad andaluza.
Malaga, a city with a long athletics tradition
Athletics tradition has a long-standing history in Málaga, that will culminate with the celebration of the SPAR European Cup in the “Ciudad de Málaga” Athletics Stadium next 28 and 29 of June. Malaga town and its region are one of the main activities centres in Spain regarding our sport being the venue of important national and international competitions and a large number of road races. We can point out that Malaga has celebrated two editions of the Spanish Championships: in 1996 and in 2005, in this case in the same stadium that will host the Cup. In addition, the city has organized the European Champion Clubs Cup in 1994 and the Spanish Championships in half marathon in 1997.
The Malaga region has also produced important names for athletics in Spain. Some of the most representatives are Carlos Azulay, Spanish champion in decathlon in 1981 and 1988; Miguel de los Santos, one the best hurdlers in Spain; the middle distance runners José Manuel Cerezo and Álvaro Fernández, the decathlete Óscar González, Natividad Vízcaino, former Spanish record holder in javelin, or walker Rocío Florido, winner in the Iberoamerican Championships celebrated in Huelva 2004. The city has important infrastructures for the practice of our sport, with three athletics tracks: the oldest is Polideportivo Carranque, built in the 1960s and the more recent construction of the University Campus of Teatinos. In addition, in 2005 with the occasion of the Spanish Championships it was inaugurated the first phase of the “Ciudad de Málaga” stadium, that will be the venue of the SPAR European Cup. Málaga is also the venue of the Andalusian Federation and has more than 700 athletic licences, that represents the 25% of the total of the Andalusian Community.
